Kei Miller est jamaïcain, et il réussit à nous faire découvrir autre chose de cet île que le reggae et 'une nonchalance proverbiale. "L'authentique Pearline Portious" est un livre plein d'invention, de rires, d'images qui tissent le destin hors du commun d'un mère et de sa fille qui semblent ne choisirent qu'à moitié leur vie, mais l'assument intégralement, et dans tous ses excès. La langue très imagée de l'auteur, et pleine d'expressions locales et d'invention ne perd rien en passant au Français grâce à une traduction impeccable, et on se laisse porter par l'histoire de ces femmes souvent tragique, mais surtout incroyablement émouvante.
